This was such a beautiful piece, Deb. This touches on a topic -- words vs. intent -- that I often struggle with in my own life. My mind tends to jump to conclusions and make assumptions on what someone said (especially over email/text), which often makes me upset. It's been a process to retrain myself to think a layer deeper and see things from their perspective.

I appreciate you sharing your mother-in-law's story with us. My condolences on her loss.

My mother-in-law taught me to judge less and understand more. I used to be more quicker to assume, and she showed me that judging by intent and not perception is a better way to live.

One thought came to mind as I started reading this: focus on the feelings, not the words.

It's simple to say but hard to do. Thank you for sharing this.

Because I knew her heart, her words were seen through those eyes. I know people reading this might be surprised, but I never doubted her intent no matter what she said.

Deb, thank you for sharing a piece of your private life. Reading this material and looking at your beautiful family photos, I felt a lot of honesty and truth. Greetings from Poland

Loved reading this and it resonated deeply especially being from a culture (I am Nigerian) where my parents express love differently.

Totally. Chinese people shows love through food and criticism. I have had to balance that with my own kids.
