Deb, your piece made me think about the idea of "creating your own table" as an act of rebellion against isolation. In a world that often feels increasingly disconnected, where digital interactions replace face-to-face conversations, opening our homes becomes a radical act. It’s a way of saying, "I see you, I value you, and I want to share my space with you." It's not just about dinner parties; it's about reclaiming the human need for physical presence and shared experience. It’s a quiet revolution against the loneliness that technology can sometimes foster. By creating our own tables, we’re building human spaces in an increasingly digital world, reminding ourselves and others of the irreplaceable value of in-person connection.

How do you deal with the logistics of prep and clean up on a week day? During weekends, after a work week as an introvert with back to back meetings, I find it tough to muster the energy to meet others, leave alone host a gathering. I am “talked out” if you know what I mean. All I want to do is to sit quietly and get going on the mundane chores to prep for the week ahead.

When we were just starting out, we cooked every meal ourselves. Our home was cluttered but clean(ish). We focused on connection not perfection.

We spent years without hosting, and it has been hard to get back into the rhythm of thinking about having people over. Like many things, it is an investment of time and energy. I am an introvert too, but connecting over a meal is a powerful way to create community.

Same, getting back into it post kids has been tough. But now that mine are old enough and enjoy cooking, this is a great idea. Going to try and make it happen this summer
