I liked the story and resonated with the word, "Personal Board of Directors."

Also, this is insightful. "During his time at Facebook, Lexy noticed an interesting pattern while he was there: those who grew into top executives at the company had surrounded themselves with people who helped them grow."

I was a at a meeting last week where the topic of having a personal board of directors came up. I was so glad our Lean In network had done a gathering on it. I've also benefited greatly from having a board like this. Thanks for sharing this great structure and why it's worth the effort.

Really interesting read, thank you! I'm curious, how often do you engage with your board, how do you typically engaged (individually, together), and do you compensate them somehow/show your appreciation?

I try to reach out to my Board members at least 3-4x / year. I usually engage with them individually depending on the leadership challenge I'm facing based on their experience & expertise. I do think getting everyone together for a group dinner is always a great idea! I don't compensate them other then buying the occasional dinner :)

Btw, please do check out Sidebar.com if you get a chance. What I love about what they do is they curate a "Board of Directors" (6-8 exec peers) for you and put together a program & structure for you to have ongoing, facilitated discussions with your Board throughout the year.

I read with interest Ha's post on building one's personal board of directors. I like it. I'm wondering how this might be helpful in the political arena. Any advice?

If you mean how this may be helpful in politics, then I would say that they could be transformative because they can give you insight that you otherwise may miss. For example, a strong BOD could help you see the impact of the political environment for your message and point of view. They can also help you shape your narrative and outreach to communities you may have overlooked who may be natural constituents. A strong BOD are advisors but they also can help you gain perspective you don't have.
