I'm in the early stage of my management journey and I was feeling like ' treading water', this has inspired me to thrive and vouch for an all new trajectory. Thanks Deb for such amazing post and mid-week morale boosters as always. :)
You've articulated what I'm currently going through in my career. I've done a bunch of side projects to quench my restlessness because my day job is demanding but not intellectually fulfilling. I've definitely had some periods of wondering if this is the end of the season and reading this is inspiring me to try to change my thinking of this time as a draught.
There are so many sentences that leap up and speak to me. Particularly the one which says "Seek Meaning Beyond Your Job.". My key takeaway from this article are: a. Go with the flow and trust the current to take you to a desired place b. Rethink what I consider the fear of failure or perceived failure itself.
When I was younger, I was more impulsive and aggressive about accolades, promotions, visibility enhancing opportunities, jumping around for better pay or advancement. What water?
I continued this trend when I joined the Big 4 Consulting world of Accenture; going to so many places, jumping to different opportunities and getting career growth in a Fast and Furious way. Surprisingly, whether intentional or subconsciously, I chose to tread water even I though could have jumped ship to the Deloitte's, McKinsey's. Perhaps for the better, since the path to Product Management and getting the exposure to build Standout Products manifested itself. A tradeoff paid itself in the long run.
The best value I get from you Deb is the clarification and validation of latent subconscious hidden thoughts and feelings; and things seem much clearer and in proper perspective. Thank you very much!
Thank you for this relatable share. It mirrors many of the stories we hear at The Narrative Playbook, which has been my new journey created during COVID in response to a liminal state of treading water.
