Good read. I think people tend to find new networks when they need it, but it's more important to keep existing network and expand through them.

I do my best to keep in touch with people from several positions back. It's not just for networking but also a sense of shared community.

This sentence struck me: "Many people overlook networking in career development, but if you learn to do it the right way, it can pay dividends when you need them the most." While I do plenty of networking, socially and spiritually, I'm apparently not doing it the right way for career development. :)

I couldn’t stand the word ‘networking’ when I worked in corporate America because I took it to mean “schmooze now because you’ll need people later when we lay you off.”

Plus I wasn’t doing anything I was terribly passionate about.

Now, at 57, I am a baby real estate agent and “networking” is my favorite part of the work. I call people whose names I see in the paper and ask them questions. I started a newsletter so I can share people’s stories. I’m not selling myself. I’m just meeting new people and loving every minute of it. I guess I am networking, but it’s so different because I strive to NOT TALK ABOUT MYSELF at all. It is hard, but I am getting the hang of it.
