Bowen's story is very inspiring, thank you for sharing Deb. I find it hard to "ask" many times just because the fear of whether it is a reasonable ask, and what the other people will think of me. It is time for a mindset change.

This is so powerful, Deb! Asking is THE most useful tool that helps make us the way forward in life. Little kids ask unhesitatingly, but as we grow up, inhibitions take over! Your post reinforced the power of it today, for me and it will be my mantra from now on that I am not ever hearing "no" I am not asking enough!

Your 'Perspectives is and will be a part of life!

I have loved every single post so far, but this one hit home! I have always struggled with asking, always felt I'm bothering the person on the receiving end. Last year I wanted to change industry and role so badly that I stopped thinking about the downside and reached out to as many people as I could. I was blown away by how much people are willing to help and give feedback. I'm excited to hear you are writing a book, can't wait!

Thanks for sharing your experience. Once you start asking and getting a few "Yeses" you realize how much you have missed out on not asking before. A very important lesson for all of us, especially those who are reluctant to put ourselves out there.

Keep them going Deb. Once again very simple, direct and actionable insight. These should be compiled into a book! Best - Isha

I am writing a book coming out next fall! There is a short section on this in Chapter 3, but I went into more detail here to remind everyone that if you are not ever hearing "no", you probably aren't asking enough.

Deb, even if the book is coming, perspectives should always be in life, no matter what. Book will be something that I can preserve like a treasure for ever, but perspective is something like a mobile treasure, I carry with me daily when I go outside.

I will keep writing Perspectives weekly even as I write the book. The book goes deep into a specific topic, but Perspective is meant to be a place I share the insights I am learning from those around me. I am glad you are enjoying it.

While this is largely focused on professional context, I can see myself applying this in my personal life as well. I always listen to "My Shot" from the Hamilton soundtrack to give me confidence before I make any moves!

Facebook first reached out to me in 2017 for a technical role and even flew me out to MPK from NYC. I knew I failed the interview because I bombed the technical assessment. I figured out how to turn a "no" to a "yes" by enrolling myself in frontend coding bootcamp to button up my programming skills. Facebook reached out to me for another shot a year later and now I've been with the company for nearly 3 years. The tech assessment was the easiest part of the interview.

People always ask me if I knew coding bootcamp would lead to where I am now (since it costs $$$). The truth is I didn't but I always bet on myself and that's the best you can do.

I love that you turned the no into a yes!

Absolutely loved it. You have amazing insights & stories to share Deb. Personally, I strongly believe in asking, however I dont always do it. Your post today reinforced that I need to start doing it every single time! One of my success stories: During my time at Paypal, I had great stories about our CTO. I was in strategy & analytics team, totally different group. However, one morning I ran into him on stairs, asked whether he would be willing to meet me . And he said yes. In that meeting, I asked whether I could shadow him for a day, and he said “yes again”. Cheers!

Incredible! This is the power of asking. Any single one of the tens of thousands of employees at PayPal could have asked the CTO for time and to shadow him, and you were the one who actually did it. And he said, "Yes."

Thank you:) Infact he told me to write a blog about it. He said "I did not even know you a few weeks ago and now you are shadowing me. You should write about your experience so more people are encouraged to ask". here is the link to that blog: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/say-ask-you-shall-receive-pallavi-hisaria/

It's a long read though!
