Bethany - I love this post you wrote. I even forwarded it to my daughter who is a rising 5th grader. Thank you for the reminder for us parents that having those small moments and open and honest are the things that will accelerate your growth vs. just the daily grind of thinking about 'what do we need to do for college.' Your mom is a pretty fantastic human and it is so nice to hear about the human side of it all. Deb! You rock!
Bethany, you're a terrific writer, keen observer, and wise beyond your years. Thank you for sharing these valuable lessons -- good reminders for all of us even though some lessons may be a challenge at times (procrastination, ha). Really enjoyed this article --looking forward to the next one from you.
I’m a rising 5th grader. I loved how meaningful your speech was. I am very inspired to be just like you an amazing writer. I really appreciate you sharing this. I have learned a lot from you. It’s amazing to see you sharing your idea in a meaningful way that makes people think twice before they consume or do something.
Amazing to see how you have unfolded a great writing at this young age. Kudos to you and your mother, Bethany. At your age, I didn’t even know how to speak English not write a sentence without errors (even now I don’t). Love you have understood your mother and took life lessons from those. Onwards and upwards. I am pretty sure you are going to create something more beautiful, powerful, and lovely that your mom and dad would be proud. 🎉🥳👏🍾🙌
Hi Deb and Bethany! I've been following Deb's newsletter since 2023. "Perspectives" newsletter has been offering me important perspectives to consider about navigating life. Bethany, I'd like to offer some perspectives from a fellow workaholic who is very much in love with what she's doing. Don't worry, I won't give you a dissertation.
Alittle bit about me, I'm pursuing a master's degree program in public health with a specialty focus in health policy. I've always wanted to improve access to quality health resources and public-health related education for local communities across the United States. I genuinely believe that my chosen specialty focus in health policy will give me the tools and skills needed to achieve my career goal. So, you can imagine what I'm thinking about and working on almost all the time. In one or two sentences about my experience pursuing this goal, it is liberating because I get to work on solving a problem that I care about very much.
I am not a mother, but I can say this. Your mother has put in all of her efforts to raise you to become a wonderful person who will actively try to solve a problem that matters to you. I can assure you that becoming that kind of person is not a glamorous job, so everything that you've learned from her will be very important to you.
I understand that you will become a senior in high school. This is a critical time for you to consider what you'll do for the next 3 to 5 years, because this is the time where you start thinking about what you want for your career. It's perfectly ok if you decide to change your career mid-way. The point is that you will have to develop basic skills needed to create the kind of career that you want from networking to obtaining accurate information to being resourceful.
I hope my perspective is helpful to you. I look forward to the next post from "Perspectives". Deb, I also wish you a healthy recovery.
This made me tear up, in the best way! Your daughter is an authentic writer, like you.
Wishing you a healthy recovery 🙌
Beautifully vulnerable and relatable. Thank you for sharing.
Lovely article! Deb, wishing you well and a succesful road to recovery.
Loved this article. I hope my boys are kind to me at 16 as you are to your mom! Well done Tiger Mom and Her Cub.
There are days when we get on each other's last nerve too, but thankfully we have a strong enough relationship to withstand them.
We are destined for our kids to both adore us and be driven crazy by us in a million ways.
